Beauty in Nature – by Alice Griffin

Beauty in Nature is an article written by Alice Griffin to Plants are Magic when they were living in Alentejo near Parque Natural de São Mamede and about when they started their craft business, making handmade pieces with the local materials.

Alice and I met each other over a decade ago through our blogs. I had recently moved to central Portugal, and she and her family were travelling and dreaming about a rural life in Portugal. We met in person during their first trip to Portugal on a warm June afternoon by the river under the shade of willows and linden trees. During these years we worked together on some projects, combining her writing with my illustrations. “Tales from a Travelling Mum” was our first project together, to which I contributed with the cover illustration.

Alice Griffin writes books, stories, poems and articles to various magazines about “wandering, off-grid, nature-fuelled, home-educating lifestyle”. Have a look at her website www.alicegriffin.co.uk

Beauty in Nature

«There is a river that runs through the São Mamede Natural Park in the Alentejo region of Portugal. It flows over pebbles in shades of copper, gold, red and brown. Its ripples dancing in the sunshine and shadows of trees that cling to the magnificent hills sweeping down from the medieval town of Marvão. As I walk alongside this river I feel its life, am buoy-ant with its energy, and so scoot down with ease to collect the fallen black walnut shells on its banks that, to my eye, look like an owl’s face or perhaps a love heart. Along with my husband and daughter we let our pockets bulge with this offering from nature as we sense the beginning of a new design.»
